The International Women’s Day 2018 was marked yesterday March 8. How many of us men took note that the world was marking International Women’s Day? How many of us understand why International Women’s Day is marked annually? International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, and has been observed since the early 1900s. My dear fellow, please answer the question beneath honestly. Today March 8, 2018 as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we launch our #FROM THE SHADOWS campaign to encourage women to rise to their full potentials and not fade into the background as the male-dominated society will like them to. Women have fought to achieve equal rights in many parts of Africa. But as in other continents, due to the fact that the world comprises largely patriarchal societies, it has become a reality that equality takes time. For example: Where women undertake paid work, there is often a wage gap between their earnings and those of men. In certain sectors,…

When we think about marriage, it’s mainly about two young people, splendidly dressed, floating down the aisle. Young people are carried away by the fairy tales they heard as children and the romance novels they read growing up, where everything seems to end with the couple living happily ever after. Reality check – marriage is not about the Prince sweeping his Princess off her feet and riding off into the sunset on his gleaming white horse and they live happily ever after in complete bliss with no worries. Most people want to celebrate their wedding day and want it to…

My beloved daughter, Most of us are prone to put off for tomorrow what we should be doing right now. However, if we go on doing this, we will end up not achieving much in our life. The hard truth my darling is that: If we do not go after what we want, we will never get it. If we don’t ask the right questions, we will always get the wrong answers. If we don’t take a step forward, we are always going to be standing in the exact place. Life is a journey comprised of small steps taken in…

Dear Dorothy, I am 21 years old and I am dating a man of 32. We have been dating for almost three years. Dorothy, I don’t think he cares about me even though he says he loves me. He rarely calls me or sends me texts. Most of the communication between us is instigated by me. I don’t ask him for money when I am sometimes financially handicapped to do certain things because he always complains he doesn’t have on the few occasions I have asked. He is well-to-do because he has a well-paid job. Furthermore, I have discovered that…

EXAMINING THE POLITICS OF IDENTITY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ANYIAM-OSIGWE’S GROUP MIND PRINCIPLE Part 5 of a 6-part scholarly examination by Tetsekela Michelle Anyiam-Osigwe of the Igbo condition in Nigeria from the perspective of her grandfather’s (Sage Philosopher Chief Emmanuel Onyechere Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe) Group Mind Principle. THE INDIGEN-CITIZEN The saliency of our indigeneship is not just a sociological or psychological aspect of our being. It does not just manifest on a metaphysical level, where it is a state of consciousness, but also rooted in linguistic philosophy. This affirmation of identity involves a speech act. It is “we Igbos,” and not…

A long-lost portrait of an Ife princess described as the “African Mona Lisa” sold at a London auction on Wednesday February 28, 2018 for £1.2m. The selling price exceeded the estimate of £300,000 for the painting when it went under the hammer at Bonhams auction house. It is a record for a painting by the late Nigerian artist Ben Enwonwu. By BIMBOLA  AMAO  Most women around here want marriages. For every girl that gets giddy because some guy took to his knee with a ring in his hand, I want to pull her back and ask, “Do you really want to do this?” Marriage is hard work, and most times the woman does the bulk of the work. So what is the excitement about this work you are about to start? I can’t even be consoled by the promise of intimacy and companionship, love and tenderness, and the unending promises. Women tend to prefer intimacy but I am the girl…
