We live in a competitive world, it takes a lot of hard work and determination to be on the top of your game. Women in particular have to work twice as hard as their male counterparts before their skills and work would get noticed. Is it possible to be the best at what you do? This is not just about being number one, there is more to it and we shall discuss further:
1. Showing consistency
You must be consistent in showing up, being heard and what you do. This way people will take you seriously. No matter the setbacks, you have to keep on doing what you do. Consistency gives way to success.
2. Stop being apologetic
Don’t doubt your abilities and cover up by being apologetic. Is your vocabulary filled with apologies like “I might be wrong on this” or “I don’t have all the answers”? It needs to change from being self-doubting to being confident.
3. Remain focused
There is competition at all levels, but you must refuse to be distracted. These distractions may come in the form of family, friends, too much sleep, pets, TV, the smartphone and even yourself. But you must stay resolute in your goals and visions. Setting SMART goals would help you stay on track. If you fail, dust yourself up and try again.
4. Be intentional about learning
Continuous learning should be a way of life. You should never stop learning as you grow older. Be intentional about learning new things and skills. It is your gateway to a better personal and professional life. The more you improve yourself, the more your skills and abilities are sharpened.
5. Keep on practising
Practice makes perfect. According to researchers, 10,000 hours of practice can make one become an expert. Learning by repetition makes one creative and brilliant. However, note that the fact that you are doing something does not mean you are practising it. Through practice, your intent is to become better. Practice should be intentional and not just repeating the same actions.
6. Being creative
Everybody is unique. Even identical twins are unique. No two persons have the same fingerprints. Discovering your uniqueness will fuel your creativity which draws attention to you. Although there is nothing new under the sun, you can still operate from a unique perspective.
7. Be current
Be up-to-date and current. People are naturally drawn towards people who are up-to-date in their chosen industry. You should stay abreast of new and fresh trends happening at work, business and even your relationships. This is achievable by reading up-to-date information on websites, books, journals, and blogs that are relevant to your industry, business and life, listening to video/podcasts and audio interviews of business/ industry leaders, networking with others in your field, etc.
8. Allow nature to take its course
Rest when you need to rest. Work when you need to work. Don’t interfere with the two. There is time for everything so avoid burnout and do what you have to do. Also, eat well as this affects your physical and mental health. Take a lot of healthy foods like veggies and fruits that are loaded with antioxidants. These antioxidants work to reduce stress in the body. Junk food would do no good because they are high in sugar content, and increase oxidative stress in the body. Don’t forget to exercise to keep yourself healthy and in shape. Quit a sedentary lifestyle. Exercising helps to reduce stress, and boosts your productivity and creativity.
