“Black tie” refers to formal wear/dressing for gentlemen where a black bowtie (primarily) or necktie is worn for evening events like banquets. A quintessential black tie ensemble comprises of “black” tuxedo, (although there is equally a white variant) worn with oxford shoes or a variant as we have here. When a black tux is worn then a white “winged collar” dress shirt must be equally worn because this ensemble is paired with a bowtie. Here it comes in black to give a sharp contrast with the shirt.

Keeping with the accessories the colour of the gentleman’s bowtie is to be matched with that of his cummerbund. It is for this reason the gentleman here is sporting black cummerbund. Furthermore, the pocket kerchief/square worn must be of the same colour of the gentleman’s shirt (white). This is because this look is highly conservative and even when accessorising it must be by the book. It is for this same reason the wrist watch worn must be dress watch, characterized by its simple, understated nature. As observed by the longines wrist watch worn by the model.
Notwithstanding, one could add a touch of colour by wearing a silk evening scarf. Notice that the colours of the scarf have a dull hue but its combination of red, yellow and brown bring warmth and makes the ensemble appear vibrant. In addition to making the gentleman look more suave. The colours of the scarf compliments the gold angel broach that rests on the left lapel of the gentleman. This impeccable outlook is consolidated by presence of the cane. An accessory which many do not know is synonymous with black tie, but unfortunately has been relegated in recent years.

Some might consider this look to be somewhat mundane or downright boring but on the contrary, it is in its simplicity that lies its strengths. A reason being it is the preferred choice by the world’s leading spy agent 007 as every James Bond throughout the years has opted for this same look for scenes that involved evening banquet ceremonies. This is because such dressing is mature and respectable. Moreover, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Many young gentlemen who are picking out their prom outfits would want to standout from their peers and as result they more often than not mismatch patterns, colours and fabrics. The end result is an outfit that reeks of colour riot. Conversely, the gentleman who opts for this ensemble instead would come across as well put together, composed and charming. All the necessary ingredients required winning the prom king on the night.
Please note, a tuxedo’s “black” trousers are unique for they have a thick glossy black line known as a “panel” which divides the trousers along its sides as observed in the magnified image of a black tuxedo trouser. So don’t go and pair any random black trousers with your tuxedo.

Other variants of this ensemble could be seen in the Kingsman movie franchise where Galahad was found sporting the ensemble with tartan trousers, which is an evolution of Scottish Black Tie that saw tartan kilts paired with a bowtie, (white) winged colour shirt and black tuxedo. The gentry in London, England mainly wore the trouser adaptation. Some might argue that when paired with tartan trousers there is no need for a cummerbund but we still advice you wear one. The white tuxedo variant of this ensemble is a mirror image of its black tux variant, for a black or tartan trouser can be worn and despite the white tuxedo the shirt must still remain white whereas, the bowtie is black as usual. As observed by Ryan Goslin.
