Love is a beautiful thing. It is more beautiful when two imperfect people come together and commit to love themselves through thick and thin. With some celebrities and people giving marriage a bad name, we can still boldly proclaim that there are still good marriages. Yes, the type devoid of physical, mental and verbal abuse. Marriages that are kept sacred, make homes and builds the society.
Truth be told, this is a walk in a park. It takes the commitment of both parties. As someone said, marriage is 100-100 percent not 50-50 percent.
As a new bride, here are things to note that have proven to be the recipe for a great marriage:
1. Your husband comes next to God
No matter your belief or value system, your husband should be your next priority after God( unless it is toxic marriage). He should even come before your children. Some women make the mistake of putting their children before their husband. Don’t forget that these children would become adults and pursue their life dreams, leaving you and spouse alone. You should cultivate your friendship and relationship with your husband. Make him number one after God.
2. Forgive
Forgive for the wrongs done and the wrongs to be done. Marriage can not survive with grudges. You will need to forgive your partner. Remember you are both imperfect people coming from different backgrounds. You are likely to annoy each other. Always have the heart to forgive.
3. Communicate
There is no marriage without communication. It is the lifeblood that keeps the marriage bond strong. Couples should learn to talk about anything and everything to each other. Give no room for silent treatment. Talk about your plans, how you spent your day, what you want eat, just everything etc. You should not keep secrets your spouse.
4. Know his love language
There are basically 5 love languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Does he appreciate gifts more? Does he love your support? Does he like compliments? Know your husband’s love language and use that to keep your marriage spicy and interesting.
5. Don’t stop dating your man
After marriage, some couple don’t schedule time for date nights. They stop dating. Marriage becomes an official duty. Remember how you were both all over each other while dating? Don’t let it end, keep the flames burning.
