Q: Why do I feel itchy after eating Egusi Soup?
(Obinna, London UK)
A: Obi, this reaction is actually quite normal. Let me explain 2 reasons for this. Most Africans may find that since moving to Europe and consuming foods rich in white refined sugar may give them intolerance to soups, foods and carbohydrates (semolina, white bread, donuts, biscuits, pizza) that contain Gluten, which is another form of sugar.
In this case, our beautiful soup Egusi is made from melonseeds. These seeds are rich in natural sugars which is causing you to experience ‘Shingles’ which is when your body itches internally.
A secondary explanation may be that whomever prepares your Egusi soup is using peanuts to add texture to the soup. If you have not been checked for Allergies, you may be unknowingly allergic to nuts or tree nuts.
Not only does gluten, sugar cause itchiness and rashes, it can also bring people out in boils and acne, so if you notice any of these symptoms, record how your skin reacts after consuming Egusi, or foods rich in sugar (from natural fruits or refined carbs)
I hope that helps – if it’s any consolation, my favourite soup is Ogbonno, no allergens in that delicious soup!
