Renowned American artist and icon, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, along with her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, are set to star in a prequel to the 2019 Disney hit ‘The Lion King,’ titled ‘Mufasa: The Lion King.’
Directed by Barry Jenkins, the musical film serves as both a prequel and a sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic adaptation of the 1994 Disney animated blockbuster that inspired it.
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter will reprise her role as Nala, while Blue Ivy Carter will voice Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala. The movie is slated to hit theatres on December 20, 2024, and will delve into the life story of Simba’s father, Mufasa, portraying his journey from an orphaned cub to a wise and benevolent king.
The plot follows Rafiki as he narrates Mufasa’s legend to young Kiara, with Timon and Pumbaa providing their trademark humour. Flashbacks reveal Mufasa’s early years as an orphan cub until he meets Taka, a lion heir, and their ensuing journey with a group of misfits seeking their destiny amidst challenges from a formidable adversary.
Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices Scar’s brother, Aaron Pierre voices the titular character Mufasa, and Donald Glover returns as Simba. The ensemble cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, and John Kani, among others.
The movie’s soundtrack features songs penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Jenkins promises an expansive adventure filled with comedy and poignant moments, ensuring a captivating experience for audiences eagerly anticipating this beloved classic’s return in December. Watch the trailer here.
