Every man likes to see himself as a stud who is able to satisfy his female partner sexually. When it comes to matters of sex, men are considered more sexual than women in terms of attraction and how they respond to certain sexual stimuli, this is entirely normal and healthy. And because of this, men find it easy to get an erection during sexual intercourse.
However, some men experience this ability casually or not at all. These type of men may find it difficult getting an erection when the need arises. Sexual impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction or ED, is a common health condition. It’s simply the inability for a man to have or maintain an erection long enough to satisfy himself and his partner, sexually.
Sexual impotence is one of the most familiar sexual problems that affects almost 50% of the male population aged above 40 years. This can evolve into a more severe condition, as men get older. The lack of knowledge and proper sensitization on the issue increases the number of men that could experience this problem. Also, because of the fear of being socially stigmatized, men are less likely to seek medical help for this condition. Though the condition may be temporary, it is nonetheless distressing for the sufferer.
Causes Of Erectile Dysfunction
There are several causes of impotence known today. Some may be caused by medications and its side effects, like high blood pressure medications, anti-depressants, cancer treatments, diuretics, and epilepsy medications. Always inform your physician if this happens, so he’ll prescribe a different medication.
Men who have diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) are also prone to impotence since diabetes contributes to the damaging of blood vessels that causes a certain nerve damage called peripheral neuropathy.
Other health conditions such as prostate cancer, diseases in the nervous system, and Peyronie’s disease also contributes to reasons for impotence. Injury in the spinal cord, sex organ or a pelvic fracture can also lead to this condition as well.
Surgeries done near the nerve pathways of the penis (bladder, rectum, and prostate) can also cause nerve damage to the penis, resulting in erectile failure.
Smoking, alcohol abuse, illicit drug use, and prolonged exercise are also reasons for impotence since these factors provide impairment to the nervous systems in various ways.
There are also psychological reasons for impotence which involve stress and anxiety, problems with your relationship, and fear of failure (performance anxiety). By seeking help to control the stress, or by counselling, you can decrease the chances of having impotence.
Always inform your physician regarding any symptoms or irregular sexual response, so that proper treatments can be performed.
