Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) the nation’s sole collective management organization for musical works and sound recordings has today commenced the music licensing of Nigeria’s vibrant transport sector with God is Good Motors Ltd. This action is followed by a strong resolve taken by the COSON Board at the start of the year to ensure that the society fully engages and licenses the sector which daily exploits music belonging to COSON members and her affiliates in huge volumes.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager of COSON, Mr. Chinedu Chukwuji who is currently in Luanda, Angola for the CISAC African Regional Meeting expressed satisfaction and said, “I am glad that the several months of painstaking work done in the transport sector is beginning to pay off. This is a good development for intellectual property rights in Nigeria and we will take it further. I wish to congratulate the Management of God is Good Motors Ltd. for taking the initiative to ensure that they operate in an environment free from harassment by right owners and I implore other transport companies to take a cue from them.
“For us at COSON, we remain committed to promoting the copyright culture in our environment. We have deliberately and strategically penetrated industries which consume music in huge volumes. We currently have a music copyright agreement with the hotel industry and the broadcast industry in Nigeria which ensures that the members pay copyright fees to COSON for the music they use. While we will continue to engage the transport sector, we will be engaging the telecommunications industry very soon and hope to get full cooperation from them. We continue to encourage all who may wish to, to deploy all the music they want to boost customer experience but most importantly, to ensure that they get the appropriate license for the music deployed.”
Following the licensing by COSON, God is Good Motors Ltd. is hereby authorized to deploy music in their 70 buses and 5 bus terminals across the country.
It will be recalled that following the intransigent attitude of Big Joe Ventures Limited; COSON had recently filed a 500M Naira lawsuit against the Benin City based transport company.
