Dear Dorothy,
Lately, I’ve been feeling like I need to do something for myself career-wise, but I am completely overwhelmed. There are so many self-development courses out there, and I don’t know which to choose. I feel like everyone else is moving ahead while I am stuck in one spot. To make matters worse, I hardly have time between work, home lif,e and just trying to stay sane.
How do I know what training to do, and how do I find time for it all?
Yours,
Ciara
Dear Ciara,
You are not alone in this. Many people are in the same boat, torn between wanting to grow and simply keeping their heads above water. First things first, breathe. Self-development is not a race. It is meant to support your growth, not drain what little energy you have left.
Start small. Instead of signing up for the biggest or trendiest programme, take a moment to ask yourself: What skills do I need right now? What area would make the biggest difference in my life or career if I improved it? Your answers will help narrow your options.
Next, consider microlearning. There are shorter courses, podcasts, or audiobooks you can consume in 10 to 15 minutes a day. Even watching a video while cooking dinner counts. It is not about doing everything. It is about doing something, even if it is one thing at a time.
And here’s a secret: sometimes saying “not now” is part of self-development, too. Honour your current pace. The growth will come.
With warmth,
Dorothy
