Dear Dorothy: Should I tell my husband that I cheated on him?

Dear Dorothy,

I’m married but a few months ago, I had an affair with someone at work. My only defence is that I was drinking heavily because my husband was working abroad. My colleague and I met several times in a local hotel for sex and he said he’d leave his wife for me.

Then everything came crashing down when our boss confronted us about it. Now my husband is due home – should I tell him the truth or keep quiet about the whole thing? It’s all over, after all.

Dear Denise,

In an ideal world, you’d give your husband a chance to get his breath back and then tell him everything. Otherwise, there’s a chance that he’ll hear the truth from someone else – and that would be dreadfully unfair.

I realise you feel awful but this is a matter that’s between you and your conscience. I understand that you were lonely without your husband, but alcohol is never an excuse for anything.
