Labour Party, Edo State chapter has threw its weight behind the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC for their call to both federal and state governor to increase workers minimum wage to N56, 000.
In a press statement issued in the state capital, Benin City, by the party secretary, comrade Fred Akhere and the chairman, comrade Sam Omokaro read thus: “Labour Party Edo State congratulate The Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, The Organised Labour and All Working people in Edo State on this auspicious occasion of 2016 May Day Celebration in commemoration of the struggled for workers over the years”.
“The Working Class and the Quest for Socio-economic Revival is the theme of this year’s celebration. There is no contradiction to the fact that it is synonymous with the conditions of workers not just in Edo State but Nigeria in general”.
“The working class at the moment is passing through harrowing experiences occasioned by inflation, poverty, unemployment, inadequate health care facilities, flooding and erosion to mention but a few. It is on this basis, we add our voices to the call by NLC and TUC on Government to approve the request for 56,0000. Minimum Wage”.
In the light of the above, it is our prayer that the labour of Nigerian Workers especially in Edo State shall not be in vain”.
