The year 2021 is coming to an end yet the strings of 2020 still hold us. That year is definitely a year we’ll never forget. The whole of society as we know it came to a standstill. Lives were lost both from the virus and the protest, businesses were destroyed and some ventures have still not recovered. But somehow, through all the hardships, we survived. We saw another year and it’s coming to an end. But at this time of the year, we can’t help but re-evaluate and ask ourselves meaningful questions. Like are you proud of your actions, did you treat your neighbours right, did you turn a blind eye to someone who needed your help? Can we individually look back at our actions and say “Yes, I did good”?
It’s utterly depressing to note how much compassion is becoming endangered in our society. To see how lost the concept of humane is to humanity. We are all so focused on ourselves that we fail to see how what we do could affect the next person. From the leaders to every single one of us. We live in a society where instead of helping one another, we try to bring each other down, where those designated to protect are who we need protection from, where jobs which are already difficult to find aren’t granted without special favours, where girl children go to school to learn and are instead hounded or even worse, raped by those trusted to educate, where people are exalted and celebrated not for their virtues or the good they do but for their vices and riches. Yet only a few speak up and only a few care. We all see it but somehow the truth is a bit too difficult for some to bear.
The truth being that we need a Humanity check. We need to realize what is right and what isn’t. We need to realize that our actions lay a foundation for the newer generations and If not for us then we should at least change for the younger ones. The society we are building, the morals we exhibit is what they pick up and what they imbibe. We’ve been through a lot as a nation, both the bad and the good we went through it all together. This also we can do as one.
The year 2021 is coming to an end and it’s about time for a change. The change surely can’t happen overnight but it can start with one person at a time. Let us look back at the end of the next year and be proud of our actions, look back and be proud that we did in fact make an impact in our lives and in our society. Look back and be able to say “Yes, I stood up for what was right”. We should make these changes not just for our future, not just to be better examples to the younger ones but for a better society and for a better us.
