Every human farts. It is not a bad thing in itself even though it is causes so much discomfort. Farting is the by-product of the digestive system breaking down and processing food/nutrients. It happens when gas and air builds up in the gastrointestinal tract after eating. Some food gets absorbed naturally by the body and then gets released as a fart.

- When you consume too much fibre and you fart too much, you become constipated. You should drink more water to liquidize your stool. Reduce your fibre intake to ease bowel movement.
- If you noticed you are farting day and night,it could be traced to excessive intake of carbonated drinks such as Seltzer, soda, beer and hard seltzer. They introduce more air (and thus gas) into the gastrointestinal tract, making farting more frequent. Substitute carbonated drinks with beverages that don’t make you fart.
- Naturally farts should not smell. However, if you noticed yours smell badly, it could be linked to sulphur rich food and cruciferous vegetables (e.g. cauliflower, garlic, onions, cheese, beans and dried fruit)in your diet. If your farts smells persistently, you may have inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome. It is advisable to see your doctor.
- Whenever you fart and you have abdominal pain or discomfort after eating, it could have resulted from food intolerance. It is better to see your doctor if condition worsens to know the food group that works best for your body system.
- When you fart more than stool, it should be a source for concern because this is stress in action. Instead be more aware of gas-producing foods you might be stress-eating. Anxiety can also affect the gastro-intestinal system by changing your stooling frequency. Stay healthy by practicing de-stress techniques like mindful meditation and deep breathing, which can keep you from swallowing excess air.
