There are so many things to contend with that it is paramount you put yourself first sometimes and take your health seriously. Note that there is no health without mental health. In fact, the World Health Organisation (WHO) states, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity.” With your mental health in check, you can cope with the normal stresses of life and then contribute to society and work productively. Here is how to guard your mental health:
1. Speak up
Try to not hide feelings. Open about the sad moments. When you talk about your feelings, you would stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled. Speaking up is a way to cope with problems and being listened to help to feel supported.
2. Exercise regularly
Exercise helps to boost your self-esteem, to concentrate and to feel better. This does not necessarily mean doing sport or going to the gym alone. You can also take a walk down the street or in your compound to keep you active.
3. Eat well
Avoid caffeine and sugar while dealing with mental health because it can have immediate effect on you. So, take a mix of nutrients to stay healthy and function well. Also, don’t forget to eat at least three meals each day and drink plenty water.
4. Take a break
Carve your own ‘me time’ by taking a break from work, social media and every other things that could add to your mental illness. A change of routine would sinificantly solve the problem.
5. Be you
Accept who you are. Understand that we all are different and so are our paths. Being comfortable about yourself naturally boosts your self-confidence. So, be proud of who you are.
6. Speak to a mental health expert
It is advisable to seek professional help if your mental health deteriorates. Seeking help is a sign of strength and not a weakness.
