Celebrities have a large influence in today’s world and the cultural direction of our modern societies, especially amongst the young ones. A good number of celebrities are being looked upon for inspiration by our youths, attracting a large number of following on their social media pages.
An issue of great concern to me is the unawareness or, perhaps, the stoical nature of these celebrities. Do they know that their position attracts the responsibility of setting a good example and being upright mentors?
Let’s examine an area where these celebrities are setting very questionable examples – the Baby Mama and Baby Daddy drama. Recently it seems most Nigerian male celebrities prefer having children out of wedlock than getting married, while there are some who despite being married still have baby-mamas. Among these are, Tuface, Flavour, Wizkid, Davido, Tekno, Burna Boy, Teebillz, Timaya, Olamide, to name a few.
With this long list of names, these celebrities are telling our young ones that:
- It’s okay to get young girls pregnant and make a show of it without being married to them.
- Fatherhood does not come with responsibilities.
- They are not aware that children raised in a single-parent household have more issues to deal with than those raised by both parents.
- Children of single parents tend to live in poverty more often than their two-parent counterparts.
- When a baby mama has to work, the result is that the child is left in the hands of daycare providers instead of a parent.
- They are oblivious of the fact that it takes the efforts of both a mother and a father to bring up a child who is physically, emotionally and mentally balanced.
The big question is: should a child be brought into this world to satisfy the selfish desires of a short-sighted lady and an egotistically bloated (and equally careless) celebrity father? There is no gainsaying that a celebrity baby daddy and a would-be baby mama should not make a conscious (or semi-conscious) effort to bring a child into this world if both parties don’t plan to settle down together and raise the child.
- If the child is a boy, he needs his father around in the home to teach him how to be a man, a good husband and a responsible and loving father.
- If the child is a girl, she needs her father to teach her that she deserves to be loved, cared for and respected as a valued person of the human race.
IT IS UNFAIR TO THE CHILD to be fathered by an irresponsible celebrity dad and to be abandoned to the mom to bring up.
Our youths should be wary of these highly questionable and unacceptable lifestyles of some of our top celebrity male figures and know that this morally defiant way of life is not worth emulating.
