Words Do Matter
“Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body”. Proverbs 16:24
Communication between people is mainly through the spoken word. Words we use when we communicate with others can make a big difference in their lives as well as ours. It is therefore important to consider the words we use when we communicate. Your tongue is a very powerful tool and it has the power to make or mar.
People oftentimes remember when someone’s kind words helped them in a situation. It might not seem like a big deal, but people always cherish a kind word. As Dale Carnegie puts it – “Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime”. The words we use can uplift someone and make them feel special. This is a major reason why we should be careful when we address others in speech, as it can transform us who say the words and positively impact on those we address.
How well can you communicate? Are communication skills up to par? No matter what you do in your professional or personal life, you have to communicate on a regular basis. In addition, the way people perceive you, how successful you are in presenting ideas, and your ability to work in a team is highly dependent on your communication skills.
When someone asks you – ‘How are you doing?” are you curt or dry with your response, or are you thoughtful enough to grasp that the person is really asking about your well-being and take the trouble to be gracious and respond appreciatively with a smile. Be patient to listen when being spoken to and be gracious in your response.
When you want to speak, it pays to be measured in speech. Be conscious of choosing phrases in a more positive, focused and accountable way. Sarcasm in speech is best avoided.
Your tongue is a very powerful tool and it has the power of life and death. It does not cost you anything to use your speech to encourage and uplift others. Indeed, words can make a big difference in the lives of others and in your live as well.
