Happy new year! Going by the energy and momentum that hits the new year, it is expected you take stock of where you are and where you are headed. Regarding your career goals, have you done an annual checkup? If not, you need to do so to identify changes that you would want to make in your work-life this year. Do you want a new job or promotion? Are you happy with your current position and want to boost performance? How do you enrich your network? These and more are questions that should be at the top of your mind.
The new year gives a new slate to set the tone for your career goals right. Remember that they should be SMART i.e Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timebound. You should consider the following as you set career goals for the new year:

Identify the most critical relationships in your work life and attach a goal for each. Think of how you can sustain and improve these relationships.
2. Past goals
Did you carry over any 2020 career goals? If yes, take note of them and jot down the primary goals in your career you would like to achieve this year. This may include landing a new job, promotion, exploring a new industry, etc. Ensure they are timebound.
3. Career projection
Think of the job title, employer type, and industry that you would like to be in by the end of this year. Aim high and dream big, and then map out strategies to take you on this path.
4. Personal brand
You would need to work more on your brand. Focus on the types of projects, assignments and roles that would make your brand visible in the workplace.
5. Career values
This should serve as a guide in your career path. Think of the top three career values you would like to honour most throughout this year.
6. Career passions
What interests you about your career path? Focus on the top three career passions that you would like to be involved in this year. Also, focus on two or three career gifts or talents that you would like to use this year.
7. Follow industry trends that apply to your goals
Follow industry trends that are most likely to impact your career in this year. Think of specific actions that you can take in the next 12 months to make positive impacts. How would you mitigate any potential negative impacts?
8. Personal and Professional Development
Think of the work-related skills that would make you scale up this year. It could be any formal or informal training. Note that any skill acquired can boost your resume and LinkedIn profile.
9. Achievements
Identify achievement opportunities that exist for you in your current role this year. Are there projects or initiatives that you think will enable you to be a problem solver, stay innovative and meet your company’s goals? These should be your concerns.
10. Breathe
While it is expected to step up your career game, don’t lose yourself in the process. Take time to breathe and enjoy every day of the year.
