At a webinar I attended recently, the discussion was on competition at the workplace. While many were of the opinion that competition should only be for oneself and not with others, some others came up with stronger arguments. According to the latter, competiting with others can be healthy and good if you use the energy to be a better version of yourself.
This brings us to the rivalry at the workplace. In most cases, if you have rivals at work, there is tendency that you are competing with them to outdo them to be in the good books of your boss.
Are you facing workplace rivarly? The following suggestions would help you stay on track:
The best approach for dealing with workplace rivalries is to rise above it. Here are a few tips for doing so:
- Work hard and be attentive on doing quality work
Instead of measuring what the other person has done and you are not doing, use the time and energy to be diligent with your work. Be focused in giving your tasks your best. It should be either 100% or 100% nothing less.
- Display devotion to the company, your supervisor and co-workers
Show that you are a loyal team member. There is no way you are against your company, supervisor and co-workers that it would not show in the quality of your work and relationships. Be that worker, that is trustworthy enough to not speak ill of anybody and is seen as the standard.
- Be courteous towards your teammates
Respect is reciprocal. Be professional in how you relate with other teammates. Someone said you are not in the workplace to make friends, do your work and go home. This makes sense, but you don’t want to soil the relationship with your teammates, because you never can tell when you would need them and viceversa.
- Open yourself up to learning from others and accepting new ideas
Don’t have the know-it-all attitude. Be open to learning and accepting new ideas from both senior and junior colleagues. Having an open mind, makes you get along with people. It does not create barriers and it shows you have a teachable spirit which is endearing.
- Promote teamwork and propose ways for teamwork
Adopt the team playing attitude. Ability to lead teams to meet organisational’s goals is high demand skill that would make you go far in your career journey. Always recognise and work toward common goals.
