MOVIES
FURY
St. Brad Pitt, et al.
When a movie with over $50 million USD budget opens over the weekend at $23 million USD, then I lose my smile, but if recent numbers since Guardians of the Galaxy opened at the cinemas is anything to go by, then “FURY” with a budget of $68 million USD opening at number one with a weekend box office number of $23.7 million USD might not be categorized as too bad, but all the same, I am not smiling. The movie? It’s April, 1945… and the second world war is about to come to an end. The Allied force make their final push in the European Theatre, hardened by battle, Brad Pitt plays the role of army sergeant Wardaddy who commands a Sherman tank and a five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. They are outnumbered and out gunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, will Wardaddy and his men strike at the heart of Nazi Germany and inflict maximum casualty on the enemy force?
On a Scale of 0 – 10, this movie is a 6.9.
DAZZLING MIRAGE
St. Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett, Kunle Afolayan, Yomi Fash Lanso, Adewale Ayuba, et al.
There are a few movie makers in Nigeria that makes me hold my head and shout, WOW!? For someone who saw Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 and wondered when next we’ll see another amazing Nigerian movie, Tunde Kelani just showed me, I needed not wait too long… “Dazzling Mirage” is a sickle cell story… years after watching Omotola Jalade and Fred Amata tell the story of sickle cell in ‘Mortal Inheritance’, this generation will now learn and get to experience this story again in right casting, good directing and more… but above all, the sickle cell story is the blackman’s story, the story of love and…
On a Scale of 0 – 10, this movie is a 7.1.
MUSIC
ADA OBI (Music Video)
St. Donjazzy, Di’Ja, Reekado Bankz and Korede Bello.
For the first time, I get to see Donjazzy and his new MAVIN recruits do it all by themselves with nature.
The story line though hastily shot shows how free Donjazzy could get and how the MAVIN freshers can easily adapt to scripts and do their thing. ADAOBI is a song that’s worth your time and by the way, you could learn a thing or two about falling in live in the village.
On a Scale of 0 – 10, the Music video is a 5.
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS
WizKhalifa ft. Snoop Dogg and TY Dolla $ign
Though released on July 22nd, ‘You and Your Friends’ is up on my radar this week and DJ Mustard’s ability to give it that West coast feel via the sound makes the track identifiably unique, not after the act’s auto-tuned “We Dem Boyz” success. How best to describe the track than use Wiz’ own words: “this is an attempt to get away from colour.”
On a Scale of 0 – 10, the Song is a 6.5.
