At least 71 people were killed today and 124 people injured due to a bomb explosion at Nyanya motor park on the outskirts of Abuja.
The attack comes less than 24 hours after around 60 people were killed in villages in Borno state by Islamist insurgents, Boko Haram.
President Jonathan canceled a trip to Ibadan to visit the blast site and express his condolences:” Government is doing everything to make sure we move our country forward even with these unnecessary distractions that are pushing us back,” he said. “We will get over it.”
These words may do little to comfort a frustrated populace with such attacks occurring with disturbing frequency. ThisDay reported 210 people dead in attacks spanning four towns in Borno State between Thursday and Friday last week.
On Saturday, 70 students were killed on the way to sit their Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
An estimated 1,500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed this year alone due to insurgency.
