The Senate has confirmed Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal. This follows the presentation and consideration of the screening report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) is the chairman of the Committee. President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter urged the Senate to approve the nomination of Justice Dongban-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal.
Monica Dongban-Mensem is the daughter of M. B. Douglas-Mensem, a retired Appeal Court judge. She attended Ahmadu Bello University, where she gained a LL.B and LL.M. She then studied for a postgraduate diploma at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London.
Previously, she served as the Acting Presiding Justice of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal between November and December 2009. Before her nomination as Appeal Court President, she was appointed Acting President, Court of Appeal on Mar 6, 2020. She launched a book titled ‘The Defendant’ in 1991. .
Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem also founded Pa William Mensem Education and Scholarship Foundation (PAWMESFO) in 2009. She also founded a road safety organization called Kwapda’as Road Safety Demand (KRSD). She is a mother of four children (one deceased) and two grandchildren.
