One of the many, many highlights of SMW day 3, the music conference hosted by The Beat 99.9 FM, hosted by Douglas Jekan and Dami Elebe.
With a star studded lineup including Omawunmi, Lynxx, M.I, the day long conference discussed a number of important issues concerning social media and the music industry. From television vs streaming, how artists utilise social media and branding, to touring and financing.
Each discussion underlined the importance of social media in the Nigerian music industry and how it helped artists continue to break new ground.
MI premiered a music video and Youtube and took part in a Google hangout with the governor of Lagos state, both firsts. He spoke of the importance of making data readily available to all at a lower cost arguing that it will benefit the consumer and stakeholders
Teju Ajani from Google spoke about the importance of artists utilising as many mediums as possible to ensure their content gets maximum exposure. “The right platform should be used at the right time.” she said.
This wave of new media doesn’t mean that traditional media should be neglected as it is still a powerful force. Colette Otusheso from MTV highlighted the importance of terrestrial television as it has the best reach in Nigeria. It was therefore important for artists to ensure there are different ways to consume content.
