A Ugandan school teacher is staring death in the face following a charge of “aggravated defilement” slapped on him.
Currently cooling off in custody, George Makande must be cursing his stars for reporting the 11-year-old he had been sodomising to his mum for misbehaving by refusing to work in the dormitory.
It was when the mother queried her son following the teacher’s complaint that the severely abused kid overcame his fear of the teacher’s threat to kill him and spilled the beans.
“I hate that teacher …
“But why”, she asked.
“He has been abusing me. It was after bathing and I was naked smearing jelly on my body when teacher Makande took me to his room and used me. He told me that I should not tell anybody or he would kill me.
“I did not tell you what happened when you came to visit me on visitation day. After you left, it happened again. I was abused by the teacher on several occasions leading to anal pains between April and May this year.” His mum was aghast..
Makande, 32, has since appeared before the Kasangati Grade One Magistrate’s Court. He is alleged to have waylaid the boy in the school dormitory.
According to Ms Irene Nakimbugwe, the deputy PRO of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, said Makande had been charged with aggravated defilement because he was the minor’s teacher. Mr Makande was also the school warden.
In Uganda a person convicted of aggravated defilement is liable to a maximum sentence of death.
Mr William Ssebina, the director of the school, said Mr Makande had spent more than two years at the school but must have developed the heinous idea “after we assigned him to work with the kids.
“I can’t keep quiet about this whole matter because I am a father and I don’t wish this for my children”.
The boy is receiving treatment from various hospitals including St Francis Hospital Nsambya and Naguru Hospital.
Attending to the boy, the mother, Ms Jane Nakate, said they had been receiving threats from the accused’s relatives.
“We have been threatened that we forged letters. The reason we came out is because the relatives of the suspect have gone to the media claiming that we are framing him (the teacher),” she said.
“The boy has loose sphincters and is passing out faeces without control and had a scar in the anus”, the police surgeon’s report noted.
A medical examination the police surgeon conducted on the suspect at Nsambya Police Health Centre IV found the accused’s mental status normal.
