The late former UN secretary general, Kofi Anan, has been laid to rest in Accra, the capital of his home country, Ghana. The event which took place yesterday – Thursday 13th September – proceeded with the state funeral at the Accra International Conference Centre.

A number of world leaders and dignitaries arrived in a timely fashion to pay their last respects to him. Among those are Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, president of Ivory Coast, current UN secretary general, António Guterres and the leaders of Liberia, Namibia, Ethiopia, Niger, Zimbabwe, Germany and Mauritius and the chief of Ghana’s Ashanti region.

Mr Anan was known for his astute approach to work and his sage-like knowledge. “Always remember you are never too young to lead and you are never too old to learn.” António Guterres said, quoting one of Anan’s popular sayings. In such a time in Nigeria where the nation clamours for real change, this quote is golden.

May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.
