Saturday was the day she set aside for washing her clothes. Aduke had never liked the activity. She tried as much to minimise her clothes so she had less to wash weekly. It was while she was sorting the coloured clothes from the whites, her phone beeped. It was from her bestie, Tiara.
They were office colleagues but overtime they grew to be besties and ‘partners in crime’. Wondering the purpose of her call, Aduke answered with a hearty hello. It was face time. Thanks to technology, they could chat and gossip like they were both physically present.
” I wanted to share good news…” Aduke could feel the excitement in Tiara’s voice and facial expression.
“He proposed?” Aduke asked, if not that what else could be so exhilarating.
“Not yet babe….calm down. I got Mr Ogudu to approve my transfer” Tiara responded
It was long time coming. She remembered all that Tiara had to go through to get to work everyday, coming from one end of the city to get to the other end daily. It was stressful. Tiara would have stayed with her but she was still staying in her family house and did’t want to be a burden.
“Girlfriend, let’s drink to that. Finally…..at least no more complains and worries. The workplace is close to you. Only that I would miss you and your wahala” Aduke said, laughing out loud.
“I am winning in all ways. Guess what? I am now closer to my bobo sef” Tiara was still ecstatic. Sensing that her friend was gradually pulling away, she turned the conversation around.
“So how far with you na?”
“I am good….so happy for you!”
“I know right…..so how’s your bobo?”
Aduke paused to get her thoughts together. “That guy is not ready for marriage. He lost his job and has become MC Hammer broke. I have been the one sponsoring the relationship”
Tiara responded, “Really? But that should not be an issue. He would get another job now”
“When? I don’t know if I can wait for him at this my age. He is telling me to build with him but the cement I have has finished. Is it love I would chop” Aduke reached for a glass of water to drink.
They were still face timing and got a glimpse of each other’s room. One was messy, the other was properly arranged.
“My dear, chill ooo... All the Adeboyes, Fela Durotoyes and Femi Otedolas didn’t get to where they are now just like that. Their wives built with them. If you bobo is lazy and no making any effort to grow that it when it is a bad signal”
“But how long would I wait? This love thing is not sweet again. Have you heard that no romance without finance?”
“Is it the man’s duty to finance a relationship?”
“See question….so it is the woman? Are thought we were meant to be helpmates?” Aduke was sarcastic” I am tired of the relationship”
“Just because he is broke?”
“What should local woman do now?”
“Just don’t be too hasty with your decision. If you believe in his potentials, you shouldn’t quit but if he is lazy and making lame excuses, then cut him off”
“I hear you” Aduke yawned “So when are we washing this your good news?”
“If you are not busy tomorrow, let’s hang out”
“No wahala…venue?”
“I send you details. ” Tiara’s connection was becoming weak. They had to end the video call. It was back to Aduke left by herself and pile of dirty clothes. She didn’t want to think about her bobo. She didn’t know whether she should end the relationship or be patient with his condition. Only time would tell.
