Birthdays come once a year. It is a day to cherish your existence. Living purposefully makes you look forward to the special day every year. If you do otherwise, your birthday is a reminder that you are getting older. This comes with panic, fear and every negative emotion to destabilise and steal your joy.
In the spirit of #ThrowbackThursdays, we would be looking at the greatest birthday music we used to jam too especially at birthday parties as children. The party was the type the celebrant would be surrounded by friends and family with the cake in his/her middle. On the pronouncement of cheese, a nice photograph would be taken and that would serve as a reminder for the rest of the person’s life of that age. Let’s take a look at the birthday songs we used to rock to then:
1. Stevie Wonder’s Happy birthday
Stevie wrote this birthday tune for Martin Luther King Jr., as part of the campaign to get the day recognized as a national holiday. Guess what? It worked.
2. 50 cents’ In da club
We had our favourite line from the song ” Go shawty, i’s your birthday”. The “song had “bad” instrumentals.
3. Leslie Gore’s It’s my party
She reminds us that it’s your birthday so do whatever you damn well please, even if it’s making the rest of the people at your party feel extremely awkward. The song was used in Problem child movie.
4. Destiny Child’s Birthday
One of the greatest music group sang a special birthday song for celebrants. This Beyoncé & Co.’s 1998 debut was played to slow things down, post-cake and ice cream.
5. Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s Thank you Mr. DJ
This song became a national anthem. If it was not played at your party, it was either the party lacked taste or the organisers were ámateurs who lacked good judgment.
