It is often said that people deserve the leaders they get.
In a conversation bewailing the current situation of the country, you’re likely to hear multiple references pointing towards our poor governance and corruption-imbibed political structure and rarely do you see accusing fingers pointing to the common man as a huge part of the problem.
Recently a tweet caught my attention. See below.

People who fry akara, puff-puff, yam, meat, fish, etc., use transformer oil mixed with vegetables or groundnut oil to fry the stuff. Ariel detergent is used to ferment cassava for fufu, fish sellers spray sniper on dry fish to keep flies out.

The common man knows the danger of engaging in such unhealthy acts. The people who do this are aware that these practices are bound to leave trails of diseases and sickness which may be fatal in some cases, yet they do it stoically with one end goal in mind – money.
The same can be said about the wave of kidnapping and stealing (the supposed impunity of SARS comfortably falls under this umbrella) currently plaguing the country. These corrupt acts aren’t committed by politicians or government officials, but the common man.
So, what exactly is our problem?
