Nigeria’s wedding ceremonies were once grand cultural showcases, brimming with unique customs passed down for generations. Today, however, many of these traditions are fading as modern trends take centre stage. Here are some that are becoming rare:
- The Yoruba Engagement Ceremony
Known as “Introduction”, this was a vibrant pre-wedding event where families exchanged gifts, proverbs, and blessings. These days, it is often shortened or replaced entirely with a brief formal meeting.
- The Igbo Palm Wine Ceremony
In “Igba Nkwu”, the bride searched for her groom in the crowd and offered him palm wine as a sign of acceptance. Many couples now skip this elaborate ritual in favour of quicker, simplified gatherings.
- The Hausa-Fulani Kayan Zance
This was a gift-giving tradition where the groom’s family presented items such as clothes, jewellery, and perfumes to the bride’s household. Modern weddings often replace it with monetary gifts or completely bypass it.
These traditions are more than rituals; they are cultural treasures. Preserving them keeps Nigeria’s diverse heritage alive for future generations, even in a rapidly changing world.
