My Son,
Many people find comfort in being among their own – their own race, their own tribe, their own colleagues, their own friends and so it goes on. A saying goes that variety is the spice of life. This being so, we should not seek to separate ourselves from others who are not like us. We should embrace unity in diversity.
We sometimes confuse the meanings of unity and diversity as though these words are opposites of each other. The opposite of unity is disunity, not diversity. Unity means to be in accordance, or be as one, or in agreement. The word diversity refers to variety.
Diversity is not the enemy of unity, and in truth diversity and unity can coexist quite comfortably. No matter how unlikely it may seem, unity can be fully realized in diversity. The world as presently constituted is an admixture of unity in diversity.
The cosmos is filled with diversity with very little uniformity; in fact, variety is the fabric of life. Even twins that are identical are different in character. It could be said that it is the multiplicity of things, and not their sameness, that makes the continuance of life possible in the face of all adversities in the universe.
This is not to say that uniformity does not have its place in the order of things; however, uniformity fails miserably in the face of severe adversity. Regardless of the challenges, when unity is present right along with diversity, not necessarily uniformity, life on earth seems to have a much better chance of overcoming the challenges.
So it is also that when we face challenges in life, we stand a better chance of surmounting these challenges when we apply diversity of ideas and thoughts, and not uniformity of ideas and thoughts.
My son, diversity is the soul of the universe. Welcome unity in diversity.
