Weddings are joyous occasions. It is a time to celebrate the consummation of love. Two families become united. The bride and groom become one. However, there are signs and superstitions that come with the practice that holds doom. In some cultures, they show that the wedding would not last. Probably a divorce or separation would be looming in future if not properly addressed.
We may overlook that they are mere superstitions but in some cultures, they are big deals. Let’s take a look at them:
1. Rain on a wedding day
In some cultures, the rain is usually associated with sadness while some cultures see it as a blessing. For those who see the rain as a bad thing, they say it represents the tears the woman will cry during her marriage.
2. Seeing the bride in her wedding dress before the ceremony
In some cultures, it is believed that it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding day. This belief stemmed from the practice of arranged marriages in the olden days. Most times, the groom doesn’t see the bride before the wedding day. The reason was that if he saw his bride before the wedding day, he might change his mind and “take off”.
3. Dropping the wedding ring
It is considered bad luck for anyone to drop the wedding ring or misplace it. In some cultures, it is also believed that whoever loses or drops the wedding ring (whether it is the bride or groom) will pass away.
4. Carelessness during the wedding preparing
Breaking or spilling something during the wedding preparation is a bad sign that the wedding will be successful in some cultures. For example, if at the reception they are trying to set up and decorate, then a plate or glass cup falls and breaks, that is bad luck for the intending couple.
5. Seeing a black cat or any other superstitious animal
There is a commonly held belief across many cultures that seeing a black cat, crow, or owl before a wedding is a bad omen.
