From time immemorial, the Agbada formed part the African culture. It was the traditional regalia for chiefs, rulers or those in authourity. Initially, it was only the royal families and wealthy that wore the Agbada but times have changed, any man, no matter his status or position can wear the attire.
The Agbada, which is a four-piece attire usually made with the same material, comprises trousers, a long-sleeved shirt or vest, an open and flowing gown or outer-robe , and a hat or cap. ‘Agbada’ is a Yoruba term but in other cultures, it is referred to as grand boubou, boubou, and mbubb.
Agbada also originated from a similar clothing style called babban riga of the Hausa people. It was only worn by the nobles. Its popularity increased during the 1800s. It is not unusual to see men of different style and sizes wear the agbada formal occasions such as Eids, weddings, funerals, and other special ceremonies.
