Snob: a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people
She was my senior in secondary school, she came from the northern part of Nigeria but had an American accent. She was pretty lazy and choosy, choosy with friends and associates. She would be your friend if your dad was an army general, you are a princess, you are brainy or drop dead gorgeous- she had no space for an ordinary girl. She had all the ‘wanna-be’s ‘ doting on her. Some just to hear her drool over words and speak through her nose, some to be her friends, some for name-dropping reasons. She was the girl to court by other girls who wanted to be like her. I found her ways appalling and that was my first encounter with a snob.
I’ve met many snobby condescending, ‘perfect’ people, who have an opinion about everything under the sun including how you wear your own hair or choose to carry your baby. Most people who have these attitude claim to not know they are ridiculous, they think they are just smart and opinionated. It’s okay to be smart and have an opinion but NO ONE should or could have an opinion about everything under the sun. Sometimes, it’s okay to shut up; the ‘I-too-know’ attitude says more than intelligence; it gets others riled up.
If the first thing you notice about people isn’t their gorgeous eyes, heart warming smile or perfect dentition but the jewellery or handbag, you may be heading the way of a snob.
If you would frequently choose an invitation from a random acquaintance to a glamorous event over catching up with old friends at a public place, you may need to adjust your ‘snub-o-meter’.
If you would empty your bank account for a tiny apartment in a swanky neighbourhood rather than a bigger apartment in a modest part of your city; you are really high on this snub-o-meter thing.
