Dear Dorothy,
I am a 28 year old woman and recently I noticed a few strands of grey hair while styling my hair. At first I thought it was just one, but now I keep spotting more. It is making me feel older than I am and I am beginning to worry that people will notice.
None of my close friends seem to have this problem yet, so it makes me feel a little self conscious. I am also wondering if something is wrong with my health or if I am just ageing too quickly.
Is it normal to see grey hair this early? Is there anything I can do to stop it or slow it down?
Regards,
Pamela
Dear Pamela,
First, take a deep breath. Finding your first grey hairs can feel alarming, but it is far more common than many people realise. Hair turns grey when the pigment in the hair follicles gradually reduces. For some people, this begins earlier because of genetics.
If your parents or grandparents experienced early greying, there is a good chance your hair simply inherited the same pattern. Stress, poor diet, and certain vitamin deficiencies, such as low vitamin B12, can also contribute to early greying, although they are not always the main cause.
Before assuming the worst, it may help to review your lifestyle. Make sure you are eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Reducing stress, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated can support overall hair health.
If the greying is increasing quickly or you are concerned about your health, it would be wise to speak with a doctor who can check for nutritional deficiencies or other underlying issues.
Remember that grey hair does not take away your beauty or youthfulness. Many people even choose to embrace their natural greys with confidence. However, if it bothers you, colouring your hair is also a perfectly reasonable option.
Ageing is not a race, and a few silver strands are simply one of the many ways our bodies tell their unique story.
Be kind to yourself.
Love,
Dorothy
