When used correctly, highlighter and concealer can elevate your makeup routine and give your face a refreshed, radiant look. However, misusing them can lead to an uneven finish or draw attention to areas you’d rather keep subtle. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your technique, here’s a guide to the dos and don’ts of applying highlighter and concealer.
Highlighter
-Do choose the right shade for your skin tone
A good highlighter should complement your complexion. If you have fair skin, go for pearl or champagne tones. Medium skin tones look great with peach or rose gold shades, while deeper skin tones shine in bronze or copper hues. The aim is to enhance your features, not overpower them.
-Don’t apply it all over your face
Highlighter is meant to bring light to specific areas, not turn your entire face into a shiny disco ball. Focus on the high points of your face, such as the cheekbones, brow bones, the bridge of your nose and the cupid’s bow.
-Do blend it properly
Use a brush, beauty sponge or even your fingers to blend the highlighter seamlessly into your foundation. Harsh lines or unblended streaks defeat the purpose of a naturally radiant glow.
-Don’t use chunky glitter
Unless you’re heading to a festival, opt for a subtle shimmer over chunky glitter. A finely milled highlighter gives a more sophisticated, soft-focus glow suitable for daily wear.
-Do build it up gradually
Start with a light hand and build up as needed. It’s easier to add more highlighter than to tone it down once it’s over-applied.
Concealer
-Do use the right formula for your needs
Choose a creamy concealer for under-eye circles and a thicker, long-wearing formula for blemishes or pigmentation. Using the right texture ensures better coverage and longevity.
-Don’t go too light
A common mistake is using a concealer several shades lighter than your skin tone. For under-eye areas, go only one or two shades lighter to brighten without creating a stark contrast. For blemishes, use a shade that matches your skin exactly to avoid drawing attention to the spot.
-Do prep your skin
Hydrate your under-eye area before applying concealer to avoid creasing and to help the product blend smoothly. For blemishes, ensure the area is clean and moisturised.
-Don’t skip setting it
To prevent creasing and ensure your concealer stays in place, lightly set it with a translucent powder. Use a small brush or powder puff for precision.
-Do use a dabbing motion
When applying concealer, use a dabbing or tapping motion instead of rubbing. This technique helps maintain coverage and avoids disturbing the foundation underneath.
-Don’t use too much product
More concealer doesn’t always mean better coverage. Over-applying can make the skin look cakey. Use a little and build coverage only where necessary.
