…Continued from last week.
At that moment I could feel my heart racing and couldn’t help but stare at him intently. Everything in me wanted to kiss him but I did not want to seem ‘slot-like’ so I suppressed my emotions. The sound of the intercom ringing jolted us back to reality as he stepped away to answer it.
As I was regaining my composure, I noticed him better. He wore a navy blue suit and a white turtleneck t-shirt. I couldn’t hold in my compliment.
“You look really sharp today doctor Obi,” I said, “are you going somewhere?”
“Thanks” he replied “I’m having dinner with some friends later today. You don’t look bad yourself” he said, paying back my compliment.
Someone once told me a gentleman always pays back a lady’s compliment. It had me smiling like a school girl.
“This old me” I sighed “thanks anyway”
“You are an extremely beautiful woman” his face lit up as he spoke. “don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.”
No one had ever called me a woman before, I knew I was beautiful but I hadn’t felt that way about myself for a very long time. I had gotten used to being mistreated. Doctor Obi’s words ignited a little spark of confidence in me. His secretary soon walked in with water and some biscuits and he signalled with a look and said,
“Shall we begin?”
“Oui,” I replied.
“Do you speak French?” he inquired.
“Yes but not fluently. Just a little here and there,” I replied.
“We should get together for some French tea and croissant sometime after all this,” he said.
“Sure! Merci,” I chuckled.
Something about him was different from other men, besides the fact that our chemistry was tangible, he was very polite. I was so comfortable around him, so it was easy talking to him about my deep-rooted issues. Although, I was a little concerned about what he would think of me afterwards.
The session lasted fifty-five minutes this time and by the time we were done, I was beginning to feel a little hungry.
“We’ve made tremendous progress today Ebun,” he said as he closed his notepad.
“Our next session will be on Saturday. Here is a list of what you should practice before then.” He handed me a piece of paper and
I quickly perused the items on the list, thanked him and was about to exit his office, but I turned and said,
“I’m heading out to get food, can I buy you breakfast?” I could sense he was caught off guard by my question.
“Um… That’s very kind of you,” he replied, “but, I can’t socialize with patients while treatments are ongoing. Can I take a rain check?” he sounded disappointed.
“Sure, but next time the bill will be on you,” I said playfully and he nodded in agreement.
“See you soon,” I said as I took my leave.
I wasn’t too disappointed by this because it wasn’t absolute; from his response, I understood we could still hang out and socialize once the treatment was over.
Tola was already waiting for me as we had made arrangements to go to the mall together. I could not wait to share all that transpired today with her. I headed straight to her house.
Tola looked like she had just woken up from a wrestling match; her hair was like Medusa as she cuddled up on the sofa pressing her phone and watching Zee world.
“What is the matter Tee?” I asked.
“I don’t know to be honest, for a couple of days now when I wake up every morning, my body feels funny,” she replied.
“Have you had any medication?”
“Yes, I’ve had anti-malaria but the feeling has persisted.”
From my experience, I knew something was fishy so I moved closer to her so no one else could hear.
“Have you seen your period? Are you sure you are not pregnant?” I whispered.
She paused, shocked.
To be continued next week.
