The United States of America buried two great people last weekend, singer, Aretha Franklin, and politician, Senator John McCain.
Two quotes that we want to highlight from their funerals are as follows:
“It’s one thing I want to say to people in the audience. She had the voice of a generation, maybe the voice of a century, but she also worked for years, when nobody was paying particular attention.” – Bill Clinton, Former US President.
“At various points during his long career, John confronted policies and practices that he believed were unworthy of his country. To the face of those in authority, John McCain would insist: ‘We are better than this, America is better than this.'” – George Bush, Former US President.
With these quotes, can we challenge ourselves to continue walking the path of upright citizens, even if it feels like no one is noticing, or that nothing is changing?
Can we challenge ourselves to stand up and confront those in authority when we see things being done wrongly – whether at home, at work, in our communities?
It might be a long, hard road, but are we ready to get on it, stay on it, and walk till the end?
The greatness we long for as a country is within our reach, but only if we are ready to work hard for it.
