Today, we pay tribute to one of Nigeria’s most iconic figures, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion.” Onyeka Onwenu’s multifaceted career has made an indelible impact on Nigeria’s entertainment industry, politics, and advocacy for women’s rights.

She was one of our Ambassadors for Emotional Wellbeing having spoken at our 7th Pride Women Conference. She spoke on “Self Love: What’s Not to Love”. This legendary Nigerian singer, politician, and actress died at the age of 72 on 30th July 2024.
Onyeka Onwenu’s journey began in the world of journalism after she graduated with a degree in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and a Master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York. However, her passion for music soon took centre stage. Her debut album, “For the Love of You,” released in 1981, showcased her unique blend of African rhythms and contemporary sounds, earning her critical acclaim.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Onyeka released a series of hit albums that cemented her status as a musical icon. Songs like “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “You and I” resonated deeply with fans, making her a household name. Her music not only entertained but also addressed social issues, promoting unity and love in a divided nation.
Onyeka’s talent wasn’t confined to music. She made significant strides in Nollywood, starring in several acclaimed films and television series. Her performances in movies like “Conspiracy,” “Night Bus to Lagos,” and “Muna” showcased her versatility and earned her numerous awards. Beyond the limelight, Onyeka Onwenu has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights and social justice. Her involvement in politics and public service highlights her dedication to making a difference in society. She served as the Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development, where she worked tirelessly to empower Nigerian women through various initiatives and programs.

She has consistently used her platform to promote Nigerian heritage and encourage the younger generation to embrace their cultural identity. Her commitment to preserving and celebrating Nigerian culture is evident in her music, films, and public speeches.
