Makeup setting sprays have become a must-have in many beauty routines. They help lock in your look, control shine, and give the skin a refreshed, dewy finish. However, applying a setting spray incorrectly can ruin even the most flawless makeup. Here’s a guide on how to use makeup spray the right way.
- Choose the right spray for your skin type
Makeup sprays are not one-size-fits-all. Some are hydrating, others mattifying, and some provide a luminous glow. If you have oily skin, opt for a mattifying spray to control shine. For dry skin, a hydrating spray can give your makeup a healthy, fresh finish.
- Shake the bottle well
Most setting sprays contain a blend of water, oils, and other active ingredients. Shaking the bottle ensures these ingredients mix evenly, giving you a consistent mist and optimal coverage.
- Hold the spray at the correct distance
Hold the bottle about 20–25 cm away from your face. This allows the spray to disperse evenly, covering your entire face without drenching your makeup. Spraying too close can cause your foundation or powder to move.
- Use an ‘X’ and ‘T’ motion
For even coverage, spray in an ‘X’ pattern across your face, followed by a ‘T’ pattern. This method ensures the mist reaches all areas, including your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin, while avoiding heavy spots that can create streaks.
- Keep your eyes closed
Always close your eyes and lips while spraying. Setting sprays can irritate sensitive areas, and keeping your eyes shut prevents mascara or eyeliner from running.
- Let it dry naturally
After spraying, resist the urge to touch or rub your face. Allow the spray to dry naturally for a few seconds. This ensures your makeup sets properly and lasts longer throughout the day.
- Reapply when needed
For long days, especially in hot or humid weather, a light reapplication can refresh your look. A quick spritz over the T-zone or cheeks can restore hydration and reduce shine without disturbing your makeup.
