Makeup is a wonderful tool for self-expression and confidence, but it can quickly become ineffective or even harmful if not properly cared for. Like food and skincare, makeup products have a shelf life. Using expired or contaminated cosmetics can lead to skin irritation, breakouts, and infections. To keep your makeup products fresh, safe and effective, here are some simple but essential tips.
1. Check expiry dates
Every makeup product has a lifespan, usually indicated by a small symbol on the packaging showing an open jar with a number followed by the letter M (e.g., 6M means six months after opening). Pay attention to these dates and make a habit of writing the opening date on the packaging. If a product changes in smell, texture or colour, it’s best to discard it, even if it hasn’t reached its expiry date.
2. Store in a cool, dry place
Heat and humidity can degrade makeup products and encourage bacterial growth. Store your makeup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Bathrooms may seem convenient, but the constant temperature changes and humidity from showers can shorten the lifespan of your cosmetics. A bedroom drawer or vanity table is a better choice.
3. Keep it clean
Hygiene is key to maintaining the freshness of your makeup. Always wash your hands before applying products with your fingers. Use clean brushes and sponges, and make a habit of washing them regularly, at least once a week. This prevents the buildup of oils, bacteria and product residue which can contaminate your makeup.
4. Close products tightly
Exposure to air can cause products to dry out or spoil faster. Always make sure lids and caps are securely fastened after each use. This is especially important for cream-based products such as foundations, concealers and gel eyeliners.
5. Avoid sharing
As generous as you may be, sharing makeup is not advisable. It can transfer bacteria from one person to another, increasing the risk of eye and skin infections. If you must share, use disposable applicators and avoid double-dipping.
6. Use clean tools for application
Rather than applying makeup directly from the container, use a spatula or clean brush to avoid introducing bacteria. This is particularly useful for lipsticks, cream blushes and pots of foundation. Clean tools also help control how much product you use, reducing waste.
7. Rotate your products
To get the most out of your makeup before it expires, avoid hoarding products. Instead, rotate them regularly so you’re using everything in your collection. Try to finish a product before opening a new one of the same kind.
8. Watch for signs of spoilage
If your mascara starts to smell strange, or your foundation separates or feels different on the skin, it’s time to toss it. Trust your senses. Makeup that has gone off can lead to more than just bad results – it can cause infections and skin problems.
9. Label and Organise
Keeping your makeup well-organised can help you keep track of what you have and when it was opened. Use labels, dividers or even a spreadsheet to monitor product lifespans. An organised collection makes it easier to spot when something needs replacing.
10. Choose smaller sizes if needed
If you don’t wear makeup daily, consider buying travel-sized or smaller versions of products. These are more likely to be used up before they expire, reducing waste and saving money.
