It appears to be a long drive on the fashion road. Every man, once in while, may feel intimidated or fulfilled with their fashion game. No matter what plays out there, the onus of how he wants to look and be perceived rests on him. That being said, here are epiphanies every man discovers sooner or later as he becomes confident in his fashion game:
1. It is not every item that needs to make a fashion statement
Be it Hawaiian shirt, yellow flip-flops, colour-pop pleated trousers – these don’t spell out ‘ Fashion guru’. You shouldn’t dress like you’re on a mountain of drugs. If you do want to experiment with something a little more eccentric, choose a single statement piece and build around it with classic, pared-back items.
2. Copy and paste doesn’t work with style
Style is individual even though we are all an accumulation of influences from people cooler than us e.g. friends (or celebrities). Not only will everyone notice and start nudging each other when you’re not looking, but it can also trigger a ripple effect that ends with someone in the fashion prison.
3. Suits don’t always look smart
This depends on the quality of the suit and the wearer. You think you look like James Bond emerging from the ocean (yes, in a suit) before wandering into a bar to order a martini or casually kill a guy. But get it wrong and you look more like a 16-year-old who went to prom in his dad’s suit. Just find a good tailor or invest in quality suits.
4. Less is more
Sometimes the most simple outfit is the most stylish. It’s amazing how far you can get in pair of straight-cut jeans, a well-cut tee, and a cool jacket. It can be easy to get caught up in the insane whims of fashion, as you find yourself making a grand entrance in a sarong and what looks like a dressing gown.
5. Different hairstyles don’t look cool at certain ages
Certain hairstyles work for certain ages. There’s no science to it, it’s just true. This also means that different hairstyles stop being cool after a certain number of birthday candles. You are likely to change to going bald once you start experiencing receding hairlines. So the afro today, may turn to baldy tomorrow.
6. Cheap is rarely better
Bid farewell to cheap garments (which, of course, is different from inexpensive) and say goodbye to the constant threat of combustion by instead investing in a small cluster of well-made quality items that are durable.
