AY Makun’s latest comedy movie, Merry Men 3, catapulted to the number one spot on the Nigerian box office charts, securing itself as the most-watched Nollywood movie in the past week.
According to Cinema Association of Nigeria, Merry Men 3 enjoyed a substantial N18.6 million weekend haul, complemented by an additional N14.8 million during the period from Monday, October 16th to October 19th, 2023. This impressive feat amassed a remarkable earning of N33.4 million since its grand debut on Saturday, October 13th, 2023.
Though Merry Men 3 faced a 54% decrease in ticket sales during its opening weekend, resulting to a total of N17.1 million, it has since made an impressive comeback, outperforming both Merry Men 1 (₦48,699,026) and Merry Men 2 (₦37,244,420). The previous movie, Merry Men 2, which hit theaters in December 2019, set a high bar for this latest sequel.
Merry Men 3 tells the story of three merry men who confront Dafe, played by Chidi Mokeme seeking vengeance after being abandoned during a prior mission in Russia. Dafe sets his sights on corrupt politicians, believing that the group has failed to deliver justice.
Directed by Moses Inwang, Merry Men 3 has a star-studded cast, including AY Makun, Ramsey Nouah, William Uchemba, Sam Dede, Segun Arinze, Bucci Franklin, Nadia Buari, Jide Kosoko, Ufuoma McDermott, Iyabo Ojo, Francis Onwochei, Regina Daniels, and Caroline Hutchings
According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), Merry Men 3’s seven-day gross revenue has pushed it to the top of the charts, surpassing Expandables 4, which now occupies the second spot with a seven-day gross of N14.6 million and a total gross of N97.9 million.
In other news “Something Like Gold,” another Nollywood gem, secures the fourth position with seven-day earnings of N11.5 million and a total gross of N45.1 million. “A Weekend To Forget” maintains the fifth place with N6.2 million in earnings and a total gross of N44.1 million. The Nigerian box office continues to captivate audiences with its exciting cinematic experiences.
