Congratulations, you made it past the first stage of the recruitment phase. You are now being invited for an interview. However, you need to tread carefully so you eventually land the job.
Take note of the following 5 things you should never do at a job interview;
1. Forgetting to do your research
You might have the skills to do the job, but do you know how the company operates? Check the ‘About Us’ link on the company website and read their mission statement, vision and team. Also, find out who their competitors are and their major players in the market.
2. Turning up late
Unless you have a very good excuse and call ahead to rearrange, turning up late for a job interview is a no-no. It will not endear you to any employer.
3. Dressing inappropriately
Dress the way you want to be addressed. When attending job interviews, a smart casual outfit might be the current trend but professional attire is still proper business etiquette. Remember it is all about first impressions.
4. Fidgeting
Stop fidgeting with your cell phones, nail files chewing gum or any props. They all have one thing in common – they don’t belong at the interview table.
5. Poor body language
Eye contact, good posture, a cheerful demeanor and a firm handshake will get you a long way in making you have a successful interview.
6. Not speaking clearly
Take time to think before you answer questions and avoid rambling to an uncomfortable halt; it doesn’t inspire confidence. Also, don’t mumble; the interviewer doesn’t want to have to ask you to repeat an answer or have to strain to hear every word you’re saying.
7. Speaking negatively about your previous employer
This is a bad sign that shows you are not a people person. Never complain about your current employer, no matter how toxic they are. Badmouthing won’t reflect well on you.
8. Not asking questions
Interviews are meant to be two-ways. Employers want to see you’re interested enough to hear more about the post or company and will look kindly to any well-placed questions.
9. Lying on your C.V
Anything written on your résumé could be discussed at an interview and fabrication about your work or education record could damage your reputation in the long run.
10. Getting too personal or too familiar
Avoid giving personal stories about how much you need the job due to the mountain of debt you have accrued. Also, don’t behave in a conceited or over-familiar manner; it never makes a good impression.
11. Cursing or use foul language
Using foul and inappropriate language is generally not acceptable at any time in the workplace, so it is an especially bad idea in an interview.
12. Not following up
