The Nwa Ala Collective on 23 February 2023, presented the first volume of its sociological visual art magazine, SORO SOKE Mag, “Selling the Vote”, capturing the essence of the current moment in Nigeria’s social, cultural and political life. Nigerians are set to vote in the country’s presidential elections on 25 February 2023.
Selling the Vote – The Election Volume features artists Ikechukwu Anyiam-Osigwe, Abraham Caster, Oluyomi Akinagbe, Tai, Idonrenyi Akpan, Omoyemi Ogedengbe Silver, and Scruffy Joe. The artists present a variety of art mediums to capture the mood, anticipation and promise of the elections.
Though the Founders of the Collective emphasise the magazine is not political, the first volume was deemed appropriate and in line with the country’s collective consciousness at the start of 2023. Socially conscious, the artists featured regard it as their duty to reflect and document society’s activities through their work and visualised the sociological impact, perspective and process of the electoral season.
SORO SOKE Mag is one of the projects of the Nwa Ala Collective. Nwa Ala is a word of Igbo origin meaning child of the land. The Collective seeks to provide a space for creatives to express the authenticity of their experiences, and the diversity of culture, language and experiences. The Collective emphasises the visual language through the magazine. It is among the earliest means of expression, and has stood the test of time – from cave paintings to photos on Instagram.
