That night, she had just started suffering childbirth pain when gunshots pulled peace off the throne. Everyone cowered and those who were on the street ran off trying to seek safety. The gunshots stopped, silence prevailed but she couldn’t keep the screams even when a towel was squeezed in between her mouth. It was her first birth coupled with her being 16 years old.
The screams continued while the midwife advises her to keep calm at intervals. The baby’s head appeared and as the midwife tried to help her pull it out, her brain was pulled out instead with bullets.
Shalewa started at the figure that had shot through the window opened earlier for fresh air and ventilation. The figure chuckled jokingly and he gestured a container towards the opening. She recognizes the smell. The screams didn’t come, not even the pain. It was only a question:
“God, was this your doing?”
Then, the fire came in and the rest is history.
“WE DIDN’T OFFEND GOD”
