What kind of ‘boyfriend’ is Seyi? Imagine how he embarrassed her the other day at the market. Being the doting boyfriend that he was, the other day in the market, he had called her.
She picked his call and they exchanged pleasantries. What ensued from their conversation was better left unsaid. Seyi had demanded that she gave the phone to the fishseller to confirm that she was indeed in the market. For crying out loud, where in the world could she be? In the arms of a lover probably as speculated by Seyi.
All through their five months of dating, she had had to put up with his suspicious and overbearing behaviour. In the past, she had made excuses for him. Judging that he came from broken home and was ‘played ‘ by his ex-girlfriends, it was normal for him to think every lady was a cheat. The turn-out of events that day was enough for her to call it quits. It was getting to her neck and choking the life out of her. The way he was always checking on her. She was not allowed to talk to her other male friends. Seyi must know about her whereabouts 24/7.
At first, she thought he was caring but it became obvious, he was obsessed with her. Did she give the fish seller the phone? To fulfill all righteousness, she gave the excited woman the phone to confirm her whereabouts. At first, the Iya Basirat looked puzzled. She wondered why her customer was handling her phone. Whispering, Anita quickly told the fishseller that her fiance wanted to talk to her. It felt good holding the latest gadget in her hands. Iya Basirat managed to mutter some words to appease Seyi. Unwillingly, she handed the phone back to her customer.
Annoyed and dumbfounded, Anita left the market and made straight for home.
If Seyi was close by. She would have given him a piece of her mind eyeball to eyeball. Several questions filled Anita’s mind. Would she be able to cope with Seyi’s behaviour? This is not the kind of marriage she envisaged, with an overly suspicious partner. No breathing space. She needed freedom and space to live at least. She loved him no doubt. But love was not enough? She had hoped that he would change with time but to no avail.
How many times had she sat him down to preach about trust? It appeared it fell on deaf ears. Her phone rang again. It was Seyi. “What was it this time again?”. When she tried to ignore his calls, it further increased his suspicions.
The phone kept ringing. She refused to answer. ” What excuse would she give?”
Anita needed to have a rethink. “Can she cope?”
