Last week , we dug deep into slangs from way back from University days. The usual tradition every Thursday is to go with #ThrowbackThursday but today, we would twisting things a bit. We would be looking at modern day slangs. Nigerians can interprete and find them relatable but foreigners may have a hard time decoding. However, let’s take a look at 8 slangs of today and their meanings:
1. Mad o: This is an expression to show that something is unexplainable. It is used when something ‘blows ones mind’.
2. Abi/Shey/Ba/Ko: They are used for emphasis and serve as punctuation. They are mostly used to confirm questions and can replace “right?” e.g. “You are to the market tomorrow, abi/shey/ba?”
3. No wahala: This means no worries, no need to fret because it is settled.
4. Oversabi/ITK: This is a noun referring to someone who is a busy-body. It is also used to mock someone who over-performs his/her intelligence/knowledge. e.g. “Nobody asked for your opinion, over-sabi/ITK”
5. Aproko/Amebo: This is used to describe someone who gossips. Such people cannot be trusted.
6. Ajebutter: Also known as ‘Butti’ or ‘Butter’,refers to someone who was brought up in a wealthy family. They are not used to the hard life.
7. Ajekpako: Also known as ‘Pako’ , refers to someone brought up from a poor background. They are used to the ‘streets’.
8. Osha pra pra: This salutation is used praise someone looking elegant or polished. It is mostly used in the street to hail/greet passers-by.
