Before the introduction of long weaves and wigs, we had African hairstyles that were unique to us. Our ancestors proudly rocked the hairdos because it was their identity and culture.
Now Thread, didi, weaving, afro have evolved. Newer styling have taken over. However, some ladies are still bent on traditions and would not mind rocking their natural hair with the indigenous hairdos. Even some celebrities have made these hairstyles their trademark.
Sometimes you need to give the weaves a break and represent where you are from. Do you remember sitting on a stool while your hair was stretched with black thread? Those days, hairdo was painful while your thick hair was combed and plaited. Then after the whole process, you would be taunted by peers as ‘Village beauty’ but ‘African queen’ was sweeter to the ears.
In the mood of throwback Thursday, let’s go down memory lane and celebrate those peculiar hairdos from back in the days before modernisation.
Check them out below and if you remember the Hairstyles names, that would be great!
