Have you ever come across someone with a prominent tribal mark, only to catch yourself staring out of curiosity or bewilderment? Well, those camped on this side of the divide may come off as less offensive than those on the opposite side who ignorantly make snide comments about it. Our Woman Crush Wednesday, Adetutu Oj, has experienced a profuse amount of discrimination attached to her facial tribal markings.
Tribal marks are cultural emblems used to identify those from specific clans, however, unlike totems in form of clothing that can be changed or carved objects that can be tossed away or even traditional tattoos can be lasered off, tribal marks are permanent fixtures which the bearer has to live with forever. Unfortunately having visible scarring, howbeit symmetrical, is subconsciously repelling to most people in our society but that hasn’t stopped Adetutu from striving and reaching for what she wants.
See her emotional story below.
The face model, entrepreneur and go-getter recently started to rouse attention when Rihanna ‘endorsed’ her by following her on Instagram. And, no, it was not random. The iconic American artist is following 1,342 people on Instagram (most of who are celebrities, mega brands and fan accounts) and Adetutu is one of them.
But how did this happen?
In a series of replicated portrait images shared on her page on Instagram, Adetutu let out her desire to model for Rihanna’s makeup line, Fenty Beauty. The singer caught wind of it and followed her immediately, proving one thing, you can achieve what you want with your heart set on it. But an Instagram follow may seem like a long shot away from a modelling contract, however, those on the internet train know this is a step in the right direction.
