Peter O’Connor, Queensland University of Technology and Peter Karl Jonason, Western Sydney University In a newly published study, we found that employees who “cut corners” tend to be morally compromised, low in conscientiousness, self-focused and impulsive. This in addition to the potential for corner-cutting to increase risks. Surveying more than 1,000 Australians and Americans, we found approximately one in four employees regularly cut corners. Men are slightly more likely to cut corners than women. Cutting corners at work Cutting corners is a workplace behaviour characterised by skipping or avoiding steps important to a task, in order to complete the task…

Reading 1 Am 8:4-7 Hear this, you who trample upon the needy  and destroy the poor of the land!  “When will the new moon be over,” you ask,  “that we may sell our grain,  and the Sabbath, that we may display the wheat?  We will diminish the ephah,  add to the shekel,  and fix our scales for cheating!  We will buy the lowly for silver,  and the poor for a pair of sandals;  even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!”  The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob:  Never will I forget a thing they have done!…

Richard Hoffman, University of Hertfordshire We know we should eat less junk food, such as crisps, industrially made pizzas and sugar-sweetened drinks, because of their high calorie content. These “ultra-processed” foods, as they are now called by nutritionists, are high in sugar and fat, but is that the only reason they cause weight gain? An important new trial from the US National Institute of Health (NIH) shows there’s a lot more at work here than calories alone. Studies have already found an association between junk foods and weight gain, but this link has never been investigated with a randomised controlled…

Richard Gunderman, Indiana University The book ignited a revolution, breaking free from conventional wisdom that said children required schedules, discipline and little affection. Instead, “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Childcare,” written by Dr. Benjamin Spock and published in 1946, encouraged parents to think for themselves and to trust their instincts. Spock’s book was a huge best-seller, second in the U.S. only to the Bible. It sold more than 50 million copies and was translated into more than 40 languages. It helped to usher in a fundamental shift in how Americans approached parenting. My wife and I are pediatric…

Augustine Agwuele, Texas State University A grown man wearing his hair in dreadlocks is bound to attract attention in Nigeria. And it’s not always positive attention. Many Nigerians, regardless of their education and status, view dreadlocked men as dangerous. The hairstyle sometimes even gets a violent reaction. This bias is deeply rooted in traditional religious beliefs and myths, especially those of the Yoruba and Igbo people. My book on the symbolism of dreadlocks in Yorubaland tries to explain what knotted hair means to Yoruba people, and where these ideas come from. Numbering around 40 million, Yoruba people predominantly occupy southwestern…
