Everyday young black girls wonder how they can break into the business scene. It’s hard. It’s tough. However, having people to look up to makes the process a lot bearable. Our Woman Crush Wednesday, Paola, is that inspiration for so many young black women. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Paola “Pao Pao” Mathé ?? Mona Kasra, University of Virginia It can be hard to tell whether a picture is real. Consider, as the participants in our recent research did, these two images and see whether you think neither, either or both of them has been doctored. Image A: Is it real? Mona Kasra, CC BY-ND Image B: What about this one? Mona Kasra, CC BY-ND You might have based your assessment of the images on the visual information alone, or perhaps factored in your evaluation of how reputable the source is, or the number of people who liked and shared the images. Ronald Labonte, University of Ottawa; Fastone Goma, University of Zambia; Jeffrey Drope, Marquette University, and Raphael Lencucha, McGill University Tobacco companies are zeroing in on one of the last global markets still ripe for exploitation: the African continent. Much of the tobacco leaf and some of the manufactured cigarettes produced on the continent are exported. These exports earn the foreign currency that’s attractive to the finance ministries of tobacco producing countries. But increasing amounts of the continent’s tobacco outputs remain in Africa, with tobacco companies taking advantage of countries with weak tobacco control measures and comparatively low consumption rates that…

It is very likely that this is not the first time you are hearing about ‘Libra’ and if this is your first time, this is a good opportunity to add it to the list of trends on your radar.  Libra is simply Facebook Inc’s digital currency that is powered by Blockchain, the same software behind Bitcoin, the world’s most popular cryptocurrency with an average price of $9,300 per bitcoin.  However, Facebook’s Libra is kind of different and its eventual launch will change the face, structure, balance of power and the future of banking as well as financial services globally.  The Libra project is…

Teresa Crew, Bangor University Students are often reminded that a degree is “not enough”, and that they will also need “employability skills” – a complex combination of personal attributes, discipline-specific knowledge and generic talents – to succeed after university. They are encouraged while studying to develop skills such as problem solving, self-management and the ability to work as part of a team. All valid attributes yes, but this view is based on the idea that graduates are young and highly mobile. But the truth is that not all graduates will want to – or be able to – leave their…

Man has not figured out a lot of things. It’s there, in this life, doing something, but what? In Biology, a codon which its function is not known is a ‘nonsense’ codon. Is my love nonsense? A man must surely have a nonsense love. It could be an object you hold dear to your heart with meaning and value. It could be an idol or a team you just love. Love? Love an idol. Love an object. First of all, there is no way of communication between the two. No smell, no touch, no sight, no taste, no sound. You…

Reading 1 2 Cor 5:14-21 Brothers and sisters: The love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh; even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no longer. So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have…

The United Nations estimates that there are at least 1 billion people living in urban slums – poor areas in cities without adequate access to health care, clean water and sanitation. More than 90% of urban slums are in low- and middle-income nations, and the residents usually live in poverty and…

Emma Glennon, University of Cambridge and Freya Jephcott, University of Cambridge The best defence against Ebola outbreaks is early detection. If detected early enough, an outbreak can be prevented with targeted, low-tech interventions, such as isolating infected people and their contacts. But our research suggests that most opportunities for early detection and intervention are missed. In fact, we estimate that most times when Ebola jumps from wildlife to people, it is not detected at all. Every Ebola outbreak starts with a “spillover event,” where a person becomes infected from an animal – a fruit bat, for example. From there, people…
